Work at Groff Elementary continues to advance. This week, crews are focusing on the grounding system, including the grounding ring and rods—critical components that must be addressed as part of the corrective work at the site.
We appreciate our community’s continued support as we move through each phase needed to ensure Groff Elementary is ready to serve students again.

Work continues at Groff Elementary as part of our ongoing mitigation efforts to address construction deficiencies within the building.
This past week, crews completed the removal of the stair finish material in preparation for repair and refinishing work. In addition, layout markings have been completed for the removal of the affected floor areas throughout the building—another key step in the mitigation process.
We appreciate the community’s continued patience and support.

In recent weeks, the gym floor at Groff Elementary was fully removed as part of our ongoing work to address construction deficiencies within the building.
There have been some inaccurate reports circulating suggesting that the original gym floor will be reused. This is not the case. The previous flooring cannot be reused due to the necessary mitigation required for both the gym structure and the flooring itself. The entire floor had to be removed to address these issues. A new gym floor will be installed prior to the building reopening.
However, our team was able to preserve the center “Gator” logo panel from the former floor. We plan to invite current Groff students to sign this special piece, which will later be displayed on the wall in the new gym as a proud reminder of their connection to the school’s history.
As always, we appreciate the community’s continued support and patience as we work to ensure that Groff Elementary is safe, strong, and ready to serve students for years to come.

This past week, crews continued work on previously noted site activities, including exterior foundation and drainage improvements.
Beginning this week, the focus shifts to addressing mitigation items associated with the metal roofing system. This work is part of the district’s continued effort to resolve identified construction issues and ensure the long-term safety, durability, and performance of the building.
Moses Lake School District remains committed to thorough repairs and transparency throughout this process, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as progress continues.

Our ongoing restoration efforts at Groff Elementary continue to make steady progress.
The stairway photos highlight the beginning phase of the repair work in that area, marking another important step forward. Inside the gym, the flooring has been fully removed, preparing the space for the next stage of improvements.
Outside, crews continue excavation work to meet Washington Energy Code standards and complete the necessary electrical upgrades.
Each milestone moves us closer to restoring Groff Elementary safely and efficiently—thank you for your continued patience and support as this important work continues.

Work continues at Groff Elementary as crews make progress on key parts of the mitigation project.
The removal of the gym floor is nearly complete, with panels successfully salvaged and easily removed. Crews are now moving into additional selective demolition within the gym to address existing issues.
Outside, trenching work is underway to install a ground loop around the school and to clear a pathway along the foundation. This step is important to correct insulation concerns.
Finally, the gray electrical gear to the right of the gym door has been installed to provide temporary power that will support ongoing mitigation efforts.
We appreciate the continued patience and interest of our community as we work to ensure Groff Elementary is built strong for years to come.

Work is underway to remove the gym flooring so we can address issues with the building’s foundation system that supports CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) . CMU is the concrete block material that forms much of the Gym's structure—repairing the foundation system is an important step in strengthening the foundation and preventing future concerns.
As part of this process, crews are also beginning to remove the CMU veneer (the exterior building veneer surface) to correct problems with wall flashing that can lead to water intrusion.
To support this work, the building is currently running on temporary power. An auxiliary HVAC system will keep the right temperatures for interior finishes, while crews carry out mitigation work on the HVAC and electrical systems.
We’ll continue to share updates as progress moves forward—thank you for following along as we ensure Groff is built strong for years to come.

Work continues at Groff Elementary as we address the deficiencies that led to the school’s closure for the 2025–26 school year. Here’s a look at the progress happening inside and around the building:
- Ground Loop Mitigation – Crews have successfully exposed the ground loop using a vacuum truck to carefully avoid damaging the wire and nearby utilities.
- Wiring Access – Ceiling tiles are being removed throughout the facility to provide easier access for mitigating wiring issues.
- Stairway Safety – A protective plastic wall is in place to contain dust as crews demolish terrazzo on stair treads and landings. This step is part of mitigation work to address stair deficiencies.
- Gym Floor Prep – Preparation is underway to remove the gym floor. This will allow crews to address issues that previously impacted the floor and prepare for mitigating the overloading of the structure on the ground's bearing capacity.
We remain committed to transparency as this work continues and will keep the community updated on progress every step of the way.

Grant County PUD was onsite to provide power to the temporary service allowing the building to be offline as crews continued work on mitigating the grounding of Groff. The vacuum truck provided excavation around the building to identify any undocumented utilities as further prep work was done for electrical grounding and civil work.

Crews are hard at work at Groff Elementary, addressing deficiencies identified within the building. This week, work included breaking up sections of the exterior sidewalks and concrete in preparation for installing new grounding for the facility.
As a reminder, Moses Lake School District is currently engaged in litigation with the original contractor, Fowler General Construction, regarding deficiencies found during Groff’s construction.
We’ll continue to provide updates as progress is made. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to ensure Groff Elementary is a safe and reliable school for our students and staff.
