K-5 Curriculum and Standards

K–5 Curriculum Overview

The goal of each guide below is to inform you of the district-adopted instructional materials provided for teachers and students in the MLSD. We hope you find "Everything you need to know" about the curriculum for each grade!

How to Use
Guides are mobile-friendly, however, for the best experience, we recommend viewing from a laptop, desktop, or tablet with a larger screen. Each slide is interactive– click on the tabs to quickly jump to a subject, or click once to turn the page. Within the slides, additional links are provided for further information.

Supplemental materials are also used in individual buildings based on student needs. Please contact your child's principal for more information.

All instructional materials are aligned to the Washington Common Core State Standards.

K-5 Standards

  • Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Standards

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language provide the learning targets for our instruction. More information is available at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction: OSPI. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas. The standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.

Appropriate and effective teaching strategies are implemented in our district to build student skills in:

    • Phonemic Awareness
    • Phonics
    • Reading Fluency
    • Vocabulary
    • Comprehension: Literary and Informational Text
    • Analytical Writing
