Puberty/HIV Curriculum

Dear Parents/Guardians of Fifth Grade Students:

Instruction on the topic of AIDS/HIV/Puberty with 5th grade students in Moses Lake Schools is planned to begin no sooner than October 18, 2024.  You will receive further details regarding the dates for this instruction from your child’s school.  Washington State law mandates that students from the 5th to the 12th grade receive AIDS/HIV/Puberty education.  Students in grade 5 will receive one 45-minute class session per year.

Parents/guardians of 5th grade students are invited and encouraged to attend the AIDS/HIV/Puberty education information session.  The session is scheduled for Tuesday, September 17th at Groff Elementary Library from 6pm-7pm.  During this session, parents/guardians will have the opportunity to view curriculum materials and a video, meet the school nurses, and ask questions.  Please note, this session is structured for adults (parents/guardians only) and not intended for students or small children.  Therefore, we recommend and advise families not to bring students and small children to the information meeting and unfortunately, we are unable to provide childcare.

Parents/guardians are able to opt their student out of AIDS/HIV/Puberty instruction, but must have attended a parent information session and completed the district “Opt Out” form before instruction begins.  If you’re unable to attend the parent night, you may view the materials and video on the Moses Lake School District websitebelow. “Opt Out” forms are available either on the district website or at your student’s school and may be turned in at the school office.  If you choose to opt your student out, please complete the form immediately to ensure that when AIDS/HIV/Puberty instruction does begin at your child’s school, his/her name will be included on the “Opt Out” list.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school nurse. We look forward to seeing you on September 17, 2024.

Sincerely,

Robbie Mason
