The Moses Lake School District Board of Directors held its regular meeting on Thursday, May 21, recognizing retiring staff members, reviewing district business, and hearing updates connected to teaching and learning, employee services, safety, and student leadership.
Recognition of Retirees
The board honored retiring employees for their years of service and dedication to students, families, and the Moses Lake community. The recognition highlighted the lasting impact retirees have made across schools and departments throughout the district.
Consent Agenda Approved
Board members approved the consent agenda, which included personnel items, accounts payable/payroll, and a student travel request. No new contracts, donations, or expenditures exceeding the district threshold were presented during this meeting.
Policy and Resolution Discussions
During unfinished and new business, the board reviewed:
- Resolution 2026-09 regarding WIAA matters – passed
- Policy 2106: Program Compliance – passed
- Policy 3210: Nondiscrimination – held for a 2nd reading to be conducted on June 4, 2026
- Policy 5012: Parental, Family, or Marital Status and Pregnancy or Related Conditions of Staff – passed
District and Program Updates
The board received updates from several district departments and programs connected to the district’s strategic priorities, operations, and long-range planning efforts.
Under Teaching & Learning, Executive Director of Teaching & Learning Voni Walker provided an overview of the district’s instructional materials selection and adoption process, including the procedures and considerations used when reviewing curriculum resources and instructional materials for classrooms across the district.
Under Employee Services, Executive Director of Employee Services Michelle Musso provided an update regarding ongoing bargaining with PSE. Musso noted that updates related to the bargaining process continue to be posted on the district website as part of the district’s commitment to communication and transparency.
As part of the Superintendent’s Report, Superintendent Carol Lewis shared additional updates from recent school and department visits across the district, including time spent riding along with district bus drivers during an afternoon route to better understand daily transportation operations and student support needs.
Lewis also discussed the work beginning through the district’s Long-Range Facility Planning Committee as the district continues planning for future growth, facility needs, and long-term priorities.
The superintendent additionally revisited the district’s staffing plan involving assistant principal positions at select elementary schools, noting how the responsibilities and expectations placed on school administrators have evolved significantly over the past decade. Discussion included the increasing demands associated with threat assessment requirements, changes in student discipline laws, and expanded teacher evaluation expectations.
The board also received the annual CB Tech presentation from retiring Director Christine Armstrong in what marked her final report to the board before retirement. Armstrong highlighted continued student opportunities and programming through CB Tech while reflecting on the partnerships and experiences that have helped support career and technical education opportunities for students across the region.
Student Leadership
The meeting also included introductions of the 2026–27 student board representatives, along with comments from current student representatives and members of the board.
Executive Session
Following the public portion of the meeting, the board entered executive session to discuss legal matters with the district’s attorney.
