Community invited to gang awareness and prevention night on May 12

Moses Lake School District is inviting families and community members to attend a Gang Awareness and Prevention Community Event on Tuesday, May 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Vanguard Academy.
The event brings together the district, local law enforcement, and regional partners from the Educational Service District to provide families with information, resources, and strategies to support youth and prevent gang involvement.
“This event is about getting ahead of concerns before they become problems,” said Scott West, executive director of safety & well-being for Moses Lake School District. “When families understand what to look for and how to respond, we create stronger support systems around our students and a safer community overall.”
During the event, attendees will learn about current trends related to gang activity, warning signs families should be aware of, and proactive strategies that help guide students toward safe, healthy choices. Presenters will also provide practical guidance on how to talk with children and teens about difficult topics and how to access local support resources.
The evening is designed to be informative, supportive, and solutions-focused—centered on equipping families with tools they can use in everyday conversations and decision-making.
In addition to learning from experts, families will have the opportunity to connect directly with school and community partners who are committed to student safety and well-being.
“Families play a critical role in prevention,” West added. “We want to give parents and guardians real, practical tools—how to recognize warning signs, how to start conversations, and how to connect with resources when they need support.”
All families and community members are encouraged to attend and be part of this important conversation.
