Board Recap: Recognitions and Policy Progress Highlight May 15 Meeting

The Moses Lake School Board meeting on May 15, 2025, was filled with celebrations, recognitions, and important decisions as the school year nears its close.
The evening began by honoring several individuals and groups for their outstanding contributions. Moses Lake High School Athletic Director Loren Sandhop was recognized for being named the Washington State Athletic Director of the Year, a prestigious award acknowledging his leadership, dedication, and positive impact on student-athletes.
Also receiving accolades were staff members from the Digital Learning Center, who were recently awarded the Beacon Award from Imagine Learning. This national recognition celebrates schools and educators who demonstrate innovation and excellence in digital learning strategies.
The board also took time to celebrate its outgoing student board representatives, Javier Gonzalez and Andee Stevens, who completed their final meeting after serving during the 2024-25 school year. Javier, who will attend Gonzaga University this fall to pursue a career in law, and Andee, who plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, were both praised for their leadership, insight, and thoughtful contributions throughout their time on the board.
During the business portion of the meeting, the board approved a consent agenda that included:

A GEAR UP program request from Vanguard Academy to attend a summer Ambassador Leadership Event at Central Washington University.

Approval for the Moses Lake High School golf team to travel to the WIAA State Golf Championships.
In other action:

The board approved Policy 5278 on second reading, addressing faculty personal use of social media and electronic communication. The policy was first introduced at the May 1 regular meeting.

The board heard first readings for two additional policies: Policy 6801 (Capital Assets – Theft-Sensitive Assets) and Policy 6215 (Expense Claim Certification and Approval).

Discussions were also held regarding the surplus of district buses and purchase of new computer lab equipment for Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center (CB Tech).
Lastly, due to the Juneteenth holiday, the board voted to reschedule its next regular meeting from June 19 to June 26, 2025.
The board will reconvene in June for its final meeting of the school year as it continues planning for the 2025-26 academic year.
