Boys & Girls Club Transportation Update (Starting Tomorrow, 12/2)

Athletics & Activities
With the Moses Lake Education Association (Association) initiating a work stoppage, the District has activated its continuity plans to maintain key student activities during this disruption.
As part of this effort, coaches have been given the opportunity to continue winter sports practices at Moses Lake High School, Columbia Middle School, Endeavor Middle School, and Frontier Middle School. During the work stoppage, student athletes and families will be responsible for their own transportation to and from practice.
The District’s rationale is straightforward:
Missed school days can be made up. Missed athletics seasons cannot.
Opportunities for students to grow, compete, and participate in athletics are time-bound and cannot be reproduced later in the school year. We will not take these opportunities away from our kids. Athletics offer structure, connection, teamwork, and personal growth—benefits that matter deeply, especially during periods of uncertainty. We intend to preserve these experiences for students whenever safely possible.
Coaching during a work stoppage will remain a voluntary choice for coaches. Those who choose to continue their work with students will be supported in doing so. REMINDER: Transportation will not be provided to and from practices.
What About Games?
The District understands that the natural question from families is: “Will competitions continue?”
At this time, the District believes that all contests will continue as scheduled. Should a change be necessitated, the District will communicate such to the community via its normal channels. Transportation to and from competitions will be provided by the District.
Activities Continuing During the Work Stoppage
The District remains committed to ensuring students do not miss educational opportunities whenever possible. Advisors of student activities connected to time-bound competitions or events will have the opportunity to continue, as these experiences are time-sensitive and cannot be recreated later in the year. Advisors who choose to volunteer during this period will be supported by the District.
Coaches and advisors will communicate schedules directly to families.
Bargaining Updates
MLSD remains committed to negotiating in good faith to reach an agreement that:
is fair,
is fiscally responsible, and
can be sustained over the long-term.
Updates will be posted at: www.mlsd161.org.
If you have specific questions, not discussed in the daily update please email them to info@mlsd161.org. You can also call our Information Line at 509.793.7769 for daily recorded updates.

Sincerely,
Carol Lewis, Superintendent
