AVID is not just another program…
At its heart, AVID is a philosophy that holds students accountable to the highest standards. Provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.
AVID is a college readiness system that prepares all students for college and careers.
AVID is grounded in instructional strategies focusing on the academic skills of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR).
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Simply, AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in middle school, high school, college, and a career. Especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
AVID has been a part of Moses Lake School District's DNA since the fall of 2009, beginning with the first cohort group of students at Moses Lake High School. This first cohort graduated in 2013. Since the 2009-10 school year, AVID has grown and is now found in all four secondary schools, serving students in grades 6-12. AVID is strongly supported by the MLSD Board of Directors and is one of the Board’s Instructional Initiatives. AVID is supported by funds from the Maintenance and Operations Levy.
AVID EXCEL accelerates students’ academic language acquisition and increases their access to the 9th-grade AVID Elective and college preparatory courses. Through a sequential set of middle school 7th and 8th-grade courses, students are supported to build their academic language, leadership skills, and overall sense of commitment to school with a cohort of peers who share their same college readiness goals.
The AVID EXCEL course sequence is comprised of the AVID EXCEL Summer Bridge and the AVID EXCEL Elective. Emphasis is on developing students’ academic language proficiency in all domains--reading, writing, speaking and listening--while also developing self-determination, leadership skills, and motivation.
AVID EXCEL is offered in the 7th and 8th grades at Columbia Middle School.
